Stephen met his regular writing partner the English dramatist, lyricist and screenwriter Shaun McKenna in 1989 after
he placed an ad in the The Stage looking for a lyricist to work with. They immediately started working on MADDIE
along with Steven Dexter who suggested the project. MADDIE opened at the Lyric Theatre, London in September 1997, produced by Kenny Wax.
Stephen and Shaun have now been collaborating for over twenty five years. As well as MADDIE they have written together a critically acclaimed musical version of HEIDI (Switzerland 2005-2006 and Germany 2006-2007 Anhaltisches Theater Production), LA CAVA (Victoria Palace Theatre and later the Piccadilly Theatre, London 2000-2001 co-composer and additional lyrics), JOHANNA AND HEIDI a musical sequel to their adaptation of HEIDI (Switzerland 2007-2008) and THE RETURN OF PETER PAN a musical sequel to Peter Pan commissioned in Germany.

MY FATHER'S SON with book and lyrics by award winning writer Stephen Clark was written for the Made In Sheffield Theatre Company, directed by Steven Dexter. This dramatic and moving musical (loosely based on Hamlet), set in the steel mills of nineteenth century Sheffield, was performed between 1993 and 1999 in various venues including the Sheffield Crucible and the Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells to great acclaim.
Stephen's second musical for the Made In Sheffield Theatre Co. was THE LAST WAVE, with book and lyrics by Peter Spafford. Loosely based on the children's crusade this powerful musical theatre work was performed at the Rotherham Arts Centre in 1998 to acclaim.
With book and lyrics by fellow Sondheim pupil Edward Hardy, Stephen composed the music for a musical adaptation of
THE AMAZING MR BLUNDEN based on Antonia Barber's famous novel The Ghosts, which was performed in concert
at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden in 1995.
Stephen met the noted author Jonathan Miles in 1999 and they have since collaborated on several musicals which are at various stages of development. NIGHT SHOOT is a musical dramatization of the events surrounding the filming of the French film Les Enfants du Paradis in Nazi-occupied France. Their latest collaboration is about the relationship between Marlene Dietrich and the Soviet spy Otto Katz called DIETRICH AND THE RED SPY.
With the celebrated author Michelle Magorian Stephen has composed the music for a musical called SEA CHANGE.
Stephen’s first full-length musical was THE DEVIL AND MR STONE a Faustian tale which was performed as a late-night show at the Donmar Warehouse in July 1989.
Most recently Stephen and Shaun have written THE ONE TRUE THING, an original prequel to their acclaimed musical version of HEIDI completing a unique musical triolgy. They are currently developing ANASTASIA: A MUSICAL RIDDLE. Stephen and Shaun also contributed songs for the multi-collaborative musical THE CHALLENGE.
